Progress report ;-)

Sunday's sorting made it easy to get started on the patchwork!

Pretty soon, this selection of charm squares and some 6 inch squares was organised into groups. Each one contains 8 low volume charm squares, one really colourful one, and two 6 inch squares - which will be cut into quarters, giving me eight little 3 inch squares.

A quick test of the layout...

And the first couple of blocks came together really quickly :-)

Best of all, I decided to follow Julie's genius idea with the corners which are cut away. This is a fabulous trick, and saves waste but also creates another mini project along the way! Here goes...

Mark out a line and sew along it...

Before cutting the unwanted part, mark another line half an inch down from the sewn line. Then sew this one too.

Now you can cut between the sewn lines, and gather up all the tiny pieces ready for some pinwheels!

And the result so far? Four main blocks, and eight mini pinwheels! These are less than 4 inches across, and will still need trimming, but so cute...

Wishing you a fabulous evening to end the year!

Project planning

This week has been lovely, just the right balance of friends, family and neighbours, along with great food and time to relax! We still haven't watched much telly, but did prioritise Downton and Call the Midwife, both of which were fabulous. I've already finished my Christmas novel (The Husband's Secret - really gripping!) and we've enjoyed long dog walks every day.

Normally I don't go in for a large stash of fabric, and tend to buy a few fat quarters now and again. However, the Black Friday sales offered up great bargains, and I snapped up all these charm packs and some half yards.

In a noble gesture, I handed them over to hubby, to keep back for Christmas. Today was the day to get going! My other recent stock has come through doing the low volume charm square swap, a fabulous opportunity to get together 56 different pieces.

When I worked out my design, I realised I should have done as others did, and gone for two places in the swap. However, through picking out low volume squares from the charm packs above, and then cutting some myself, I have managed to put together enough of them...

This represents unusual organisation, as I normally make it up as I go along, but this is the whole quilt! There are 16 brightly coloured charm squares, 32 bright six inch squares, and 128 low volume charm squares. Phew, I do hope my plan works now!

The downside of having an admiring daughter, is that she wants one of everything I make ;-) This was my attempt at a Pants Bag for her, after she loved the one sent to me by Queen Pants Bag herself. We had a little mother and daughter trip to York in October, and it was fun to have our matching bags in the hotel room.

When Miss PR saw the fabric roll I made for her godmother, she naturally wanted one of those too... This was the original one, made from a kit:

And now Miss PR has one to match her Pants Bag...

Fortunately she was delighted when she opened it. November and December were so much about sewing things for other people, I can't wait now to get on with my new project! Hope you have had a great week, however you celebrated.

Linking up with Sunday Stash!

Ding Dong The Quilt Is Done!

Phew and hooray, this red and grey quilt is finally done!

Inspired by Rita, of Red Pepper Quilts, who does such beautiful simple designs, I started this over a year ago...

The top was finished in the summer. I made it in four large sections, then joined them. One infamous moment involved the cat knocking a key square onto the floor and feeding it to the puppy...

And it has been an absolute pig to quilt!!! Seriously! I wanted to do straight lines, decided it would take too long, and went for easy loops in columns from top to bottom. Never had quite so many tension problems, had to rip out loads of quilting, lots of the machine grinding to a halt as the bobbin jammed, even had a brand new needle snap in half...

But here at last and, although not a Christmas quilt, certainly festive colours to brighten up the guest bed :-)

Since today is my birthday (ssh!) a couple of nice gifts for me! My in-laws sent a wonderful book, which I am very much looking forward to getting stuck into -

Meanwhile, Miss PR decided she wanted to make me a cushion. So far she has chosen squares from my rainbow charm swap and sewn them together all by herself...

Over the next couple of weeks, we will find the time to quilt this and turn it into a cushion for the sofa. I'm off for birthday coffee and cake now with friends :-)

American booty...

My Black Friday purchases have arrived! How fab is all this?!?

Some nice half yards at crazy prices...

And an awful lot of charm packs! These were bought with intent, planning for when the low volume charms arrive from the swap I'm doing. I already have an idea brewing...

Hope you're having a great weekend!

The week of small things...

Sewing time mainly seems to be at weekends recently, so it doesn't always feel like I get much done! Bigger projects are on hold for the time being, but it has been nice this week to achieve a few small things. Yesterday we spent the morning at two different Christmas fairs, which somehow inspired me to come home and whip up a festive table runner...

I'd been mulling over using my triangle ruler to make some Christmas trees for a while. I haven't been the biggest fan of triangles, but actually this is my third use of the ruler, and this time it all went very smoothly. During the week, I rustled up a couple of fabric bags...

This one is more of a make-up bag, though I think it would also fit a kindle or small tablet. There was a piece of blue polka dot lying around that was the perfect fit for the inside -

This larger bag was made specially to accommodate sheet music books, and would take a few thin books.

The interior gives a clue about its purpose...

All in all, the Christmas gifts are starting to come together!

Apologies if you have left a comment lately and I haven't responded. I've been struggling with the changes made to Yahoo email accounts, as all the comments are now put into one thread, making it difficult to reply to each one separately. Hopefully I will work it out soon...
